John Choi Participates In January DFL Forum

John Choi - Candidate for Ramsey County AttorneyThree of the four candidates for Ramsey County attorney responded to questions from a St. Paul audience Tuesday night about why they should be elected the county's top prosecutor in November.

The forum, held at the United Auto Workers Union Hall in Highland Park and sponsored by the Senate District 64 DFL and Congressional District 4 DFL, was open to those seeking the party's endorsement. The seat itself is nonpartisan.

Here's a capsule of each of their statements:

John Choi: St. Paul city attorney, age 39. Choi's family immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1973, when he was a child. He grew up in the Skyline Towers apartment complex off Interstate 94 in St. Paul, among other places, and graduated from Hamline University's School of Law. He became a partner at "a very young age" at Kennedy and Graven and for the past four years has led the city attorney's office, with its 70 employees and an $8 million budget.

A favorite topic: Said he's a big supporter of alternative courts and finding creative solutions to keep people from re-offending. Example: His "driver diversion" program, which works to get offending drivers out of the revolving door of the criminal justice system.

Best quote: "We have to understand as prosecutors the fine line that exists between the investigating agency and the prosecution office. ... Your job is not to make the police happy."
